Prior to founding Xcel Performance, Julie Helton worked for Indiana University as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. Since her arrival to Bloomington in 2006, Julie has worked with a number of IU varsity programs, including: football, women’s tennis, women’s soccer, men and women’s cross country, women’s golf, women’s rowing, and men and women’s track and field. In addition to designing and implementing strength, agility, conditioning, and flexibility workouts for these collegiate teams, Helton managed the strength and conditioning internship program and advocated in favor of nutrition education for the Indiana University athletic department. In 2008, Julie began to branch out into the realm of personal training by aiding many IU faculty and students toward their fitness goals.
Before arriving in Bloomington Julie worked as a graduate assistant overseeing the men and women’s cross country teams at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. She also assisted with design and implementation of workouts for all other sports, including women’s volleyball, men’s golf, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, soccer and tennis. While at Marquette, Julie managed the collegiate internship program and pursued a master’s degree in educational leadership.
The Memphis, Tenn., native earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science at Asbury College. She was a member of the women’s basketball team and sat on the intramural council. She also served as a student assistant strength coach for the Asbury men’s basketball team. As an undergraduate student, Julie interned with the University of Tennessee Lady Vols’ strength and conditioning program and served as a performance coach at both St. Mary’s Fitness and the High Intensity Training Centers. Julie holds the NSCA-CPT, CSCS, and USAW certifications.
Most recently, Julie completed the certification process for neurokinetic therapy level 1. Neurokinetic therapy allows Julie to identify which muscle patterns are inactive or compensating.
Julie has also gained education to develop an abdominal curriculum for pre and postpartum women.
Here is Julie’s story:
After my first child, I developed an abdominal curriculum to help women regain their core strength and posture safely and effectively. This curriculum is so good, that I could maintain correct posture during my second pregnancy with little effort; barely looking pregnant until the 3rd trimester due to my abdominal strength. At 3 months post c section with my second child, my core felt stronger than postpartum after a natural delivery. Now I love helping moms to be and moms of any age learn activation of their core and posture and strengthening principles that result in a youthful looking body!
Julie was privileged to marry Jeremy Helton in 2010. They have a boy and girl. Asher is energetic, funny, and seeks attention. Angel loves to copycat everyone in her family. She moves like a future athlete.
